- It’s illegal to drive a motorcycle without some type of insurance coverage in almost every state
- State Farm is one of the top auto insurance companies in the country, and they also offer a wide variety of motorcycle insurance policies
- State Farm also offers a variety of extras and discounts to their policyholders
Out of all 50 in the United States, 49 of them require motorcycle drivers to have insurance. So, if you don’t live in Florida — which is the only state where it’s technically legal to drive without insurance — and you want to own and drive a motorcycle, you’ll need some form of insurance coverage. In 2021, there were a total of 8,575,569 on-road motorcycles registered throughout the United States. That’s a lot of bikes. Thankfully, there are plenty of companies that offer insurance protection for motorcycles. One of the most popular companies with a range of plans is State Farm.
What motorcycle insurance coverage does State Farm offer?
Riding a motorcycle without insurance is illegal in every state but Florida. Yet, it’s still recommended having some type of coverage in Florida because other drivers can sue you for being at fault. Then you would have to pay out-of-pocket, and you won’t get that money back. Luckily, State Farm is one of the many insurance companies that have plans to meet your individual needs and coverage. Not everyone drives the same type of bike and State Farm’s website says they cover multiple bike types including the following:
- Factory-built motorcycles
- Motor scooters
- Classic motorcycles
- Minibikes
- Custom motorcycles
- Trail bikes
- ATVs

What do State Farm motorcycle insurance policies cover?
In some states, you do not need to fully insure your motorcycle, according to the law, but there needs to be some form of coverage if you want to be out on the open road. State Farm offers partial and full coverage for motorcycles. Coverage options depend on what the policyholder is looking for, but the average plan usually includes the following:
- Liability coverage. In this case, there are two different types of liability coverage: bodily injury and property damage. This refers to any damages or injuries you cause to someone else or their vehicle if you’re at fault for an accident. Your insurance will pay for the other driver’s medical costs, for the repairs to their car, and any other damage you caused. You cannot use liability coverage to pay for your own injuries or damages.
- Collision coverage. This isn’t a required coverage to have in any state, but it could prove valuable to have. Collision coverage can help pay for repairs to your vehicle if hit by another. Or if you hit a vehicle or object. It doesn’t matter if you are at fault for the accident or not. Plus, there isn’t a limit for collision.
- Comprehensive coverage. This type of coverage is for things that happen that are out of your control. Damages as a result of theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, or even the weather fall under the umbrella of comprehensive coverage.
- Customized motorcycle parts. You get coverage for customizations made to your motorcycle. That means the insurance covers the cost of replacement parts.
Not only does State Farm offer all of the above in their motorcycle coverage, but they also include things in their policies that are typically considered add-ons. An add-on is the inclusion of something for an additional cost. Yet, State Farm doesn’t offer them as add-ons. Instead, they are included in the policy itself. Meaning you won’t pay anything extra for them like you would with some other top companies. Those bonus coverage options are:
- Attached sidecars
- Emergency roadside expenses
- Damage to protective gear
- Trip interruption expenses
How much does State Farm motorcycle insurance cost?
Like all types of insurance, the cost of motorcycle insurance depends on many factors. These factors include age, gender, driving history, type of motorcycle, what state you live in, and how much coverage you’re looking for. In 2020, the average cost of a year of motorcycle insurance was $1,173.
But is State Farm the cheapest motorcycle insurance option or even just a cheap motorcycle coverage option? While they don’t give out motorcycle insurance quotes online, State Farm will get you in contact with one of their agents, who can provide you with a quote once they gather the necessary information. Plus, they are one of the top-rated auto insurance companies in the country.
Do you need a license to purchase motorcycle coverage?
In order to drive a motorcycle anywhere in the United States, you’ll need a license. A motorcycle license is different from a regular driver’s license and is called a Class M license. It’s illegal to drive a motorcycle on a roadway without one. Although you don’t need one to purchase coverage, many insurance companies will probably ask for one to approve your policy. Sometimes they’ll take a valid learner’s permit, but more often than not, they’ll ask you to attach your coverage to a policy owned by a license holder. There’s not much use for insurance coverage if you can’t legally drive the motorcycle anywhere.

Does State Farm offer bonuses?
Something that might set State Farm apart from the rest in the realm of motorcycle insurance is the extras that come with their policies. When you’re a State Farm customer, the company provides “personalized service” from more than 19,000 agents around the country. They boast reliable service from one of the biggest auto insurance providers in the U.S. They’re also quick to handle claims and pay out promptly. If you are qualified, they even offer 24/7 around-the-clock roadside assistance.
Can I get a discount on State Farm motorcycle insurance?
Who doesn’t love a good discount? Well, State Farm also has multiple motorcycle coverage discounts available to people who qualify. In many cases, State Farm will provide their policyholders with discounts for driving without accidents over a certain length of time. You can also typically get a discount on a policy if you insure multiple bikes on the same plan. This is called a multi-bike discount. State Farm even offers discounts to people over the age of 55 if they take a defensive driving course. You might even be able to get a student discount if you have a certain GPA.
In order to find out if you qualify for any of State Farm’s motorcycle insurance discounts, you’ll need to contact a local State Farm agent or contact a live agent through their website.
